Emotional Aspects of Riding

Horses have a huge range of expression , some, like the exagerated
yawn above from the Phantom - hillarious
Our
emotional state affects the horse far more than you would think.
They can pick up on anger, fear or a relaxed state of mind, quicker
than we can.
The minute you walk into the paddock the horse can
sense what sort of mood you are in. If you are grumpy or tense, he
is likely to be hard to catch - wanting to avoid you - and who can
blame him?
They pick up on a nervous rider quicker than anything
and it immediatly makes them nervous as they figure if you are scared,
they had better be too - there must be something really spooky out
there...
This is why it is so important to be calm and in a
good headspace while dealing with horses. NEVER take your own anger
out on them. Always be calm, relaxed and quiet while handling horses.
