A Brief history of the Public Auction
The very first auctions in history were believed to be held in Babylon
when women were auctioned off annually to be married. Beautiful women
engendered a lively bidding with less attractive women having to pay
a dowry to be accepted!
Ancient Romans also loved an auction with the bidders winking or waving
to indicate a bid. In 193AD the entire Roman Empire came up for auction.
The Praetorian Guard first killed the Emperor, and then announced that
the highest bidder could claim the Empire. One can only imagine the multitude
of twitches that developed amongst the townsfolk over this auction!
These days you’ll be unlikely to find the town of Kaiapoi coming
up for auction, rather various household artifacts although Bells Auctioneers
did once auction Real estate when the business first started around 50
years ago with Richard Bell at the helm. His grandson Richard McCrone who
took over the business and they now have 4 staff in the Kaiapoi office
and hold an auction once a week – every Thursday and despite the
fact they don’t auction brides or empires, business is booming and
the auctions are popular.
