Cathy Dee originally trained as a photographer in New York under the remarkable guidance of Afro American Photographer Louis Draper in 1988 -89. "Louis Draper was an image perfectionist who took me under his wing and drilled design prnciple and image quality into my head. He was a brilliant man and one I will never forget".

After two years she returned to NZ intending to become an 'art photographer' but quickly realised the NZ market for 'art photography' was small to non existent.

After entering the Agfa-Listener photography competition with the beautiful '3 girls ballet' print Agfa sat up and took notice encouraging Cathy to join the NZ Professional Photographers Association.

With Agfa's backing Cathy was able to bypass the usual two year apprenticeship to a photographer and join as a professional.

In her first year of competition and the youngest person to do so, she won - Best portrait print and then went on to take out the top prize - Best Overall photograph, with the trilogy -
Johnny C.

Working in Wellington for 2 years in Studio Retrato she quickly made a name as one of the top portrait and wedding photographers.

Unfortunately ill health forced an early retirement from photography and she did not pick up a camera again until 2005.

Cathy feels that image quality on many web sites is no where near up to scratch - the web, obviously is mostly a visual medium and therefore the images used should be superb and worth the wait of the download.

Armed with a canon SLR digital camera, Cathy hopes to attract clients who appreciate the value of superb image quality within their web sites.

Here is a selection of images of the month. They will be changed regularly. This month features Clarice Anderson who was photographed as part of a series on elderly people.

Clarice is an amazing lady who though blind, teaches speech and music, writes poetry for children and is terrific fun to be around. Thank you Clarice for allowing me to photograph your incredible spirit!

Cathy feels that grandparents and parents are not photographed enough and would like to encourage you to have your parents shot by Cathy Dee!

If you would like Cathy to photograph someone you know, phone her on 027 306 8006 or email cathy@cathydee.com
