‘Props’ to you for choosing me to photograph you or your loved one but…that’s not the sort of props I am talking about here.
I love it when people bring props, as in interesting objects – or, of course, a favourite pet to a portrait shoot.
This not only makes the photograph more interesting to the observer, but it takes the tension away from you, the subject as it allows you to concentrate on your prop.
Sometimes, after meeting you and discussing your photoshoot, I’ll bring something that I feel might suit your personality. Way back in the early 90s, when I was a portrait photographer in Wellington, I did a series of people with various props I hired after talking to the person who wanted to be photographed by me.
One guy, came in and flooded me with information on how great he was, and how many women fell over themselves for him.
To be honest, all I could thinks was what a prick this guy was.
So, I hired a stuffed porcupine and photographed him, in his business suit, with the porcupine under his arm.
It turned out he wasn’t as bad as his first impression would have had me believe and we ended up having a good laugh about this.
I love to photograph Grandparents doing what they love doing – whether that be working with tools, or in the garden, the stuff that makes them…them😊
Of course, as someone who loves to photograph the relationship between people and pets, the very best prop IS your beloved pet.
